Purpose

The Sendai Mediatheque, designed by Toyō Itō, is an all-access public cultural institution. Itō's vision was to make a "home for all", where those with disabilities and impairments have an equal ability to utilize the complex's facilities. Culturally, Itō aims to facilitate, rather than redefine. The institution was designed to be transparent, where each floor would bleed into one another. In terms of architecture, this transparency serves an economical purpose, where natural light is utilized to minimize the use of energy. Aside from this, the true aim behind the structure is Itō's attempt at blurring the lines between cultural definition, and creating a space that represents Japan's culture as a whole, rather than the parts it makes up.
